What to do if your new home is not ready on moving day

Your mover is booked, your boxes are packed and you've been working hard for a stress-free move toward your goal. Well, things don't go exactly as planned sometimes. Once you move forward, let's get prepared for the worst-case scenario, there are several workpieces at hand.

Let's be clear-not an emergency! Don't worry anyway. Contact the business to see if any pause happens. When you're not the day's first push expect your mover to arrive as soon as possible. Most businesses will take more than 1 move a day during the moving season so just be patient and politely ask if the mover can call you an hour before you moving companies - True North Movers arrive so you don't have to sit back and wait.

Troubleshooting your move

I've been doing some renovations and my contractor has just told me that my home won't be ready on time:

I understand your current location needs to be vacated by a certain date, but contractors are often delayed. I always advise my clients to give an additional 2 weeks after their expected deadline to enable proper and professional completion of the work required. Especially when carrying heavy pieces of furniture, it is not safe for your movers to enter a construction zone so you will need to consider other options that may include:

Contact your current landlord / new owner to see if there's some way to delay moving out before the job is done.

Speak to the contractor to find out if your furniture can be securely placed in your new place ( i.e. basement, garage or other finished rooms) anywhere.

Learn about other available storage options with your mover.

True North Movers renovation tip: Ask the painter to leave extra paint for touch-ups, if you are painting your new home. If your floors have been refinished just make sure that your movers come with floor runners to protect your flooring.

Season on the move is often a domino effect. You can't go back until the other people are out. I see that happen annually. In this scenario, an experienced moving company will be used, you may have 2 companies loading and unloading the truck at exactly the same time. Completing your move may take a little longer but here, the mover is not at fault. Work with them to make the best possible out of the situation, losing your temper will solve nothing!

Well that's always the hardest question and honestly there's no good answer. You will never have to worry about this happening to you if you have followed my advice and done your research and hired a reputable company. Make sure you reconfirm your mover and receive an emergency number or you will be making some very urgent last-minute calls.

Don't worry over things you 're not in control of. Stay calm, keep your head level and try to think on your feet and find a solution that works for all.

It is the Day of Motion! Get ready, and go!

Moving Day is finally here! All of your hard work and preparation is paying off. Set your alarm clock at least 1 hour before the movers arrive, set your phone backup alarm, get ready, have your coffee and let's go!

I've seen lots of interesting, sometimes humorous and unexpected things happen on moving day for the last 20 years. I can't tell you how many people have lost their contracts, can't find their keys, can't find their chequebooks, can't find their wallet or credit cards, have forgotten to charge their phone or even forgot to pack a whole closet or kitchen cabinet? Alas, the answer is, very often!

And on moving day, here are a few things to remember:

Last Minute Conditioning

Your last minute packing is something that you should always plan for. Leave a few extra empty boxes, tape, labels and a marker. Also, just before you leave your old home, you will have to empty your fridge and freezer so try to have some cooler or cooler bags and ice packs on hand.

In front of your movers:

Place your overnight bag (survival kit) and personal belongings in your car

Take a water case for yourself and the movers-please, no alcohol.

Verify that your phone is on so that the movers will contact you in case of an emergency

When it comes to the movers:

Introduce yourself and find out who the day's team leader is so you can email them with any questions or concerns

Confirm they have the right details about the contract

Since your movers will most likely expect payment in full at the end of the day, confirm that you have readily available the appropriate form of payment

Until moving to your new location:

Walk through to ensure nothing is left behind

Verify that the movers have the correct new address

Verify you have the keys to the new place

Lock-up and ready to move forward.

We're always being asked what qualifies as an appropriate tip. Tipping out your movers is not a contractual obligation and is at the discretion of the customer. If you feel that you have provided an effective and well-rounded service from your moving crew, it is recommended that you tap to express your appreciation. Factors are the performance of the staff, the property handling, their good attitude and even humour. The cost may range from a cup of coffee per mover to $50 or more.
